Helical Pile Foundation for Boardwalk in Tsawwassen Estuary
TerraCana undertook the Helical Piles Foundation Project, engineering, installing, framing, and constructing a breathtaking 15 feet wide and 1100 feet long boardwalk in the scenic estuary of Tsawwassen, BC.
The Challenge
The estuary is an environmentally sensitive area that is home to thousands of nesting birds and rare plant species. TerraCana used a build-as-you-go approach to preserve the environment while still laying down a lasting foundation.
The Solution
Helical piles were the perfect solution because they displace the least amount of soil compared to other deep-foundation alternatives. Conventional foundation systems require larger equipment and would have caused lasting damage to the surrounding area from installation alone. TerraCana installed each pile at depths averaging 40 feet and 60 feet over water. TerraCana finished the boardwalk in just over 2 months. It now provides an elegant access point for the community to enjoy.
