South Surrey Interceptor Shoring with Reusable Soldier Piles
The South Surrey Interceptor required temporary and removable trench shoring for construction of a major sewer interceptor. Due to challenging ground conditions that rendered a continuous sheet pile wall unsuitable, TerraCana developed an innovative solution using reusable pre-drilled soldier piles in conjunction with sheet pile lagging, ensuring efficient and robust support throughout the entire construction phase.
The Challenge
The construction process required careful adaptation to match specific soil conditions. The trench had an irregular shape at the beginning of the project, adding complexity due to its proximity to general contractor equipment. The project schedule for pipe installation by the prime contractor added further challenges to overcome. The natural soils encountered varied due to past infill, consisting of firm cohesive soils mixed with occasional cobbles, sands, and silt.
The Solution
Custom drilling tools were specially manufactured to pre-drill with minimum soil displacement and removal, optimizing efficiency. An innovative bracing system was designed to be adjustable in width and reusable, reducing downtime during trench excavation and backfilling. Effective communication and coordination with the prime contractor played a vital role in streamlining activities at the site and contributed to the successful completion of the project.
